Understanding the Design Behind KANOA

The design of KANOA was built with purpose. At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss the pentagon as just a big scary building in Washington D.C.— but what if we told you there was more to it? In order to understand the reason why we chose the pentagon, you have to begin with an incredibly simple sequence of numbers…

The Fibonacci Sequence Visualized

Take a look at the diagram above. Enter the fibonacci sequence. This may seem a bit confusing at first, but there’s incredibly simple logic at the heart of it. 1+1 = 2, 1+2 = 3, 2+3 = 5, 3+5 = 8 and so on; see the pattern? The numbers grow proportionally as the spiral becomes larger by adding the last two numbers together. Though you may not realize, this spiral is literally everywhere in nature. For example, note how the flower petals grow around the stem in the fibonacci sequence providing the divine proportion within a pentagon.

So now you may be asking why would the fibonacci sequence, of all shapes it could mold itself to, default to the pentagon? The pentagon appears organically within nature because it provides the least amount of resistance and promotes the correct amount of tension to create a sustainable balance. The human ear is an organic open space, often left unexamined when designing an audio product. Your ear drastically varies in sizing, and in order to achieve the proper fit, we must separate ourselves from the norm. Utilizing everything we know, we examined the human ear and found a truly natural shape.

This is what KANOA is all about. The shape, weight, and size of KANOA is largely defined by the electronic components within the casing.

The canal, tragus, concha, cymba, and the antitragus are commonalities found in every ear, creating the five ergonomic anchor points that we primarily focused on when constructing KANOA. The angled nozzle not only holds the ear tip, but seals your ear canal to support the main body of the earphone providing the first anchor. The pentagonal body creates the second anchor by positionally securing itself between the outer ear cartilage and the tragus. The third anchor comes from the M and L sized silicone jackets that create a cymba lock by tucking into the fold of your ear. The hollowed out Suspension Bumper on the silicon jacket fits within your concha providing the fourth anchor. Finally, the last anchor is created by the base of the blue pentagon nestling into the fold of your antitragus providing surface tension to support and fully lock KANOA within your ear.

Similar to water, the flesh of your ear organically creates surface tension. This allows your ear to conform with KANOA, instead of against, to provide a naturally superior fit. We designed KANOA to embrace all of the tiny pressure points within your ear to really focus on comfort and ergonomics during extended use. The longer it’s in your ear, the more secure and comfortable KANOA will become.

From day one, KANOA has always been designed with you in mind. Examining dimensional proportions, natural occurrences, and understanding you as an individual is what sets us apart from the rest. You deserve the best with every detail, it’s our job to make happen. Thank you for being part of the Team.
